Have a BLAST!
Children create a kosher shofar. The horn is cured, sawed, drilled, finished, polished and shellacked. Once the shofar is completed, children learn how to sound it and practice the traditional sequence of notes blown on Rosh Hashanah.
It's a PRESSING matter!
Participants are involved in the hand pressing and refining of olive oil for use in the lighting of the traditional, olive oil menorah. Fresh olives are squeezed, the juice is spun in a centrifuge and distilled into pure oil. The children fashion wicks out of cotton, and when the oil is purified, light the menorah.
It's the WRITE Place!
After an introductory presentation on the making of parchment, students work on hides which have been pre-soaked in lime. They remove residual hair, stretch and scrape the skins that are used in the making of Torah scrolls. The dried parchment is then buffed and prepared for writing.
Children then mix the ingredients for the special ink. they whittle goose feathers to create quills and practice writing the letters ofthe Torah on their own, hand made parchment which they then keep as a souvenir.
